The Beatles:
The Alternate Versions Volume 1

Label:
Invasion Unlimited
Order No.:
IU 9539
Country:
Europe?

Two books were written by journalists Mark Lewisohn and Mark Hertsgaard, who had the chance to listen to every hour of music the Beatles have ever recorded, when and why. But that's not enough, is it? Don't you want to hear it?

This is the first of two CD's offering the best alternate and unreleased studio-outtakes currently available, by stroke of luck, on the underground Beatles-market. In most cases these takes were copied directly from the multi-track master-tapes. That means that the sound of many of the tracks presented here even surpasses that of the 'official' Beatles-releases. This set was designed to provide listening pleasure also for the more 'casual Beatles-Fan.

Enjoy !

I Saw Her Standing There (John Lennon / Paul McCartney)

The first shaky take of 13 takes

Can´t buy me love (John Lennon / Paul McCartney)
A well know Beatles-evergreen in a very different, early arrangement. By comparing this version (take 2) to the official one (take 4) you can tell how much arrangement-work the Beatles (and their producer George Martin) had to put in their song to turn them into hit-singles. Recorded in Paris while on a two weeks engagement at the Olympia Theatre, 26th January 1964

A Hard Day's Night (John Lennon / Paul McCartney)
The same goes for the very first studio-take of the títle song for the Beatles' 1964 film. At the heginning of this song you can hear thern trying out the famous opening-chord on l2-string guitar. Recorded l6th April. 1964.
Leave My Kitten Alone
A storrning cover-version of a Johnny Preston-rocker. Great song, great version - why was it never released. Recorded 14th August, 1964.

The second of eight takes. Arrangement no yet worked out properly. Recorded on the same day as track l7.
She's A Woman (John Lennon / Paul McCartney)
A very primitive first of seven takes. Played with only rhythm guitar, bass and drums, 8th October 1964
I Feel Fine (John Lennon / Paul McCartney)
The very first attempt at this, the Beatles eighth single. A breakdown, but interesting nonetheless, because it reveals that the song was originally written in a different key. The song had to be transposed because you can hear it is too high for John´s voice. Recorded in nine takes on 18th October, 1964
Honey Don't
On Monday 20th October 1964 the Beatles recorded five takes of this Carl Perkins-original. This is one of the early takes.

Ticket To Ride (John Lennon / Paul McCartney)
Yes It Is (John Lennon / Paul McCartney)
Basically the ofticial ninth Beatles-single (A-and B-side) but mixed directly off the four-track-master and thus asounding superior than the 'released' versions. Recorded on l5th And 16th Fehruary. 1965.
Help! (John Lennon / Paul McCartney)
Take 9 of twelve takes. Without lead guitar. Recorded on 13th April. 1965.
Run For Your Life (John Lennon / Paul McCartney)
l:17 of take 5 with an emphasized Lennon-vocal. Recording date: 12th October, 1965.
Norwegian Wood (John Lennon / Paul McCartney)
A very different and a very good version. Less commercial and more avant-garde than the version we all know. A real find. Take 2 of 4 takes , recorded l st October. 1965.
Day Tripper (John Lennon / Paul McCartney)
The instrumental first take (a breakdown) and then straight into the released version, take 3, again taken off the multi-track master, recorded 16th Octoher, 1965.
We Can Work It Out (John Lennon / Paul McCartney)
A short bit of the Paul McCartney home-derno and then straight into a rough mono mix of the tenth Beatles-single. 20th Octoher, l965.
I'm Looking Trough You(John Lennon / Paul McCartney)
An early acoustic take of this "Rubber Soul" tune. Again very different to the isssued version. with the middle eight not yet written. Recording date: 6th November. 1965.
12-Bar-Original (John Lennon / Paul McCartney / George Harrison / Richard Starkey)
On 4th November l965 the Beatles (with George Martin on harmonium) tried for some reason to become Booker T. & the MG´s (or something like that. But without a proper song to play, they quickley get loose
